$11.2 billion in total revenue reveals the growing importance of the high-performance computing sector.

The Hyperion Group research firm, which was formerly part of IDG, says world-wide revenue for HPC-related servers reached $11.2 billion in 2016 – a 4.4% increase from the previous year. The full-year sales total is a record for the HPC industry, representing the continuing evolution of the HPC market sector, which now serves major corporations in addition to government and university research institutions.

The market for supercomputers priced at $500,000 or more grew 26.2% in 2016. Overall, vendors reported that the growth in HPC server systems partially offset the decline in lower priced, conventional server systems.

HPC Enterprise had the largest share of the HPC server market with 34.6%, followed by Dell with 17.9%. For more on the state of the HPC server industry, see the report at HPCWire.
