Windows Update Causes Authentication Failures
Microsoft has announced that last week’s update for Windows systems could cause authentication failures for “...services such as Network Policy Server (NPS), Routing and Remote access Service (RRAS), Radius, Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP), and Protected Extensible Authentication Protocol (PEAP). The problem is related to how domain controllers map certificates to machine accounts.
The issue, which appears to stem from the May 10, 2022 Windows update, affects Windows Server, Window 11, and Window 10, and earlier systems. According to the company, the easiest workaround is to “...manually map certificates to a machine account in Active Directory.” See the Microsoft website for more on certificate mapping.
As of the time this news story was written, Microsoft still doesn’t have a permanent fix, but the company has pledged to provide a solution in an upcoming release.
