The seventeenth release of the VirtualBox virtual machine management tool has been made available, just three months after the last release. The 6.1.34 iteration includes plenty of changes for Linux users, which is led by support for the latest 5.17 kernel (for both hosts and guests). This means any newer Linux distribution that ships with kernel 5.17 should now run without problems as a virtual machine.

As well, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.6 kernel support has been added to the VirtualBox Linux Guest Additions package.

Other additions/fixes to be found in this new release includes a screen resize bug fix, a fix for the cmpxchg16b instruction emulation, much-improved handling of short packets in the EHCI interface, a fix for the disk I/O hang when host I/O cache is disabled, improved descriptor handling for E1000, general improvements in both the IPv4 and IPv6 area, fixed a bug that caused problems booting FreeBSD ISO images, and better unattended installations. You'll also find the VBoxManager command-line interface is now better capable of handling command-line arguments with incomplete quotes and now includes new --ipv6-prefix and --ipv6-default options to make it possible to set an IPv6 prefix and to advertise a default IPv6 route.

After installing the latest release of VirtualBox, make sure to also upgrade the VirtualBox Extension Pack.
