Red Hat Launches ManageIQ Cloud Community

Open source tool will simplify management of OpenStack cloud environments.

Red Hat has announced that it is launching a new open source community around the ManageIQ cloud management solution. The company is contributing the ManageIQ source code, which now forms the basis for Red Hat’s own CloudForms hybrid cloud management tool.
Red Hat acquired ManageIQ for a reported US$ 104 million back in December 2012. Their plan is to support ManageIQ as an open source community and continue to provide a commercial-grade version to enterprise customers through the CloudForms tool. It is no coincidence that the ManageIQ announcement occurred at the OpenStack summit in Atlanta. ManageIQ is designed to integrate OpenStack components into a simple management interface.
According to Red Hat Cloud Management head Joe Fitzgerald, “While some industry players have focused on building an open source cloud ingrastructure with OpenStack and selling expensive, proprietary management software on top of that, we believe the entire cloud should be open with no lock-in, so we are contributing this valuable code base to open up the management stack for the first time.”
