International Coalition Pledges to Combat Commercial Spyware
An agreement to combat commercial spyware that violates human rights has been signed by a coalition of countries and tech organizations, including the United States, United Kingdom, France, Google, Meta, and Microsoft, reports Tara Seals.
The coalition aims to “establish guidelines for developing, selling, facilitating, purchasing, and using these types of tools and services, including defining irresponsible behavior and creating a framework for their transparent and accountable use,” Seals says.
UK Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden says this multi-stakeholder initiative, called the Pall Mall Process, should focus on ensuring that:
- States and industry alike act responsibly in cyberspace.
- Our robust existing framework of international law and norms is equally applied in the virtual realm.
