Despite the strong overall outlook in the tech industry, layoffs can still affect IT professionals, notes Nathan Eddy. And, as tech layoffs continue, it’s best to be prepared.

This article offers several practical steps to follow if you are laid off, including taking time to assess your career goals. This is a good time to evaluate where you are in your career, understand what’s important to you, and decide where you want to go, Eddy says.

You also might want to consider temporary options, such as contract work, which can open up new opportunities.

"If you can fill a four-to-six-month gap with a project-based role that buys you more time, one that's going to keep your relevant experience up to date, then maybe you get exposed to a new industry," says Josh Drew, regional director for the Boston area at Robert Half. "You've got everything to gain, nothing to lose."
