Metaverse Standards Forum Announced
A new organization known as the Metaverse Standards Forum launched on June 21 with the goal of bringing together “...leading standards organizations and companies for industry-wide cooperation on interoperability standards needed to build the open metaverse.” According to the press release, the forum will study whether a lack of compatibility is holding back metaverse development and will recommend standards as needed for better interoperability and a more open environment.
The term metaverse loosely describes a collection of technologies centered around virtual reality and the Internet. The term was originally used by Facebook’s parent company, which has rebranded itself as Meta. The fact that “metaverse” sounds like it must be a “universe” owned by “Meta” is probably a reason why tech giants Google and Apple are not participating in the Metaverse Standards Forum, although Adobe, Microsoft, Alibaba, and several other high tech companies are onboard.
