Dynamic clock speed and other improvements boost GPU efficiency with new Kepler graphics architecture.

NVidia has launched the first GPUs based on its next-generation Kepler graphics architecture, which deliver dramatic gaming performance and exceptional levels of power efficiency. According to the announcement, the NVidia GeForce GTX 680 GPU provides a faster, smoother and richer experience for desktop gaming. For notebooks, the new lineup of GeForce 600M GPUs enables smaller, more powerful designs than were previously possible.

Kepler is based on 28-nanometer process technology and succeeds the 40-nm NVidia Fermi architecture, which was first introduced in March 2010. According to James Wang, Editor-in-Chief of GeForce.com, NVidia’s website for GeForce gamers, the Kepler architecture introduced two key changes that greatly improve the GPU’s efficiency. Wang writes, “First, we completely designed the streaming multiprocessor, the most important building block of our GPUs, for optimal performance per watt. Second, we added a feature called GPU Boost that dynamically increases clock speed to improve performance within the card’s power budget.”

The GeForce GTX 680 GPU is available from the world’s leading add-in card suppliers, and expected pricing is US$ 499.
