AWS Automation Documents

Automate AWS AMIs

The End

If you’re using AWS in your DevOps world, AWS provides the Systems Manager Automation document for virtually no extra cost (barring tiny instances and negligible snapshot costs). There’s a number of things you could use it for, such as creating a distinct AMI per appliance or purpose (i.e., one for databasing and one for e-mail or one for CentOS, one for Debian, one for Ubuntu, etc.).

I have a feeling that although SSM has been available for a while, it might change subtly over time. Even if further down the line other features are added, I hope the content of this article whets your appetite enough to start using it now.

The Author

Chris Binnie’s latest book, Linux Server Security: Hack and Defend , shows how hackers launch sophisticated attacks to compromise servers, steal data, and crack complex passwords, so you can learn how to defend against such attacks. In the book, he also talks you through making your servers invisible, performing penetration testing, and mitigating unwelcome attacks. You can find out more about DevOps, DevSecOps, Containers, and Linux security on his website: http://www.devsecops.cc.
