Intro to the MQTT Protocol for IoT Networking
The MQTT protocol, which was invented in 1999 to monitor oil and gas pipelines over satellite networks, has since become the standard for IoT (Internet of Things) messaging, says Georg Held.
Now, "billions of connected devices need to communicate and move data effectively across networks and cloud platforms," Held notes, and MQTT provides a "scalable and reliable" approach. "MQTT is an extremely lightweight publish/subscribe messaging protocol ideal for connecting remote devices with a small code footprint and minimal network bandwidth," says Held.
