NSF Group Releases a Report on Ensuring Technological Competitiveness
A group of academic institutions, funded by the US National Science Foundation, has released a report on how to achieve and maintain US technological competitiveness. The report, which is entitled “Security America’s Future: A Framework for Critical Technology Assessment” was created by the National Network for Critical Technology Assessment (NNCTA), a group of scholars brought together under the auspices of the recent CHIPS and Science Act, which was passed by Congress in 2022. The report offers general guidelines on conducting critical technology assessments (CTAs) and attempts to map out theoretical frameworks for building strategies on achieving competitiveness in key areas such as:
- artificial intelligence
- semiconductors
- biopharmaceuticals
- energy storage and critical materials
The report is still very preliminary and could best be described as a roadmap for how to create processes for achieving competitiveness. Still it takes a significant step by attempting to define a framework for further analysis.
The full report is 158 pages. See the executive summary for a shorter version.
