CERN Announces an Effort to Update its Particle Physics Strategy
The CERN Council has announced an effort to update its official roadmap for physics research, which is known as the European Strategy for Particle Physics. Because CERN is the home to the world’s largest particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider, its strategy for future research is of major importance to scientists around the world.
The European Strategy was first adopted in 2005 and was updated in 2013. The current update will chart a course for future CERN research. CERN continues to update its particle physics strategy to respond to new discoveries and advances.
According to CERN Council president Sijbrand de Jong, “The Standard Model, our theory that best describes the known forces and particles, is unbelievably successful and was crowned by the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012. But there is much evidence that it is not complete. There must be something beyond the Higgs and beyond the Standard Model, and it is a good time to reflect on where we are and where we should go next.”
Particle physicists are invited to submit written input until December 18, 2018. The community will debate the future roadmap at the Scientific Open Symposium in Granada, Spain, May 13-16, 2019. See the European Strategy website for more on the strategy update process.
