Millions of Customers Affected in Capital One Data Breach
Capital One, one of the largest financial institutions, experienced a data breach exposing sensitive information of more than 100 million customers in the US and Canada.
According to The Hacker News, “The data breach that occurred on March 22nd and 23rd this year allowed attackers to steal information of customers who had applied for a credit card between 2005 and 2019.”
Capital One had no idea about the hack until a hacker posted the information about the theft on GitHub.
Hacker News reported that the FBI has arrested Paige Thompson a.k.a. erratic, 33, a former Amazon Web Services software engineer who worked for a Capital One contractor from 2015 to 2016.
The compromised data includes approximately 140,000 Social Security numbers and 80,000 bank account numbers linked to American customers, and 1 million Canadian Social Insurance numbers.
