IBM Set to Acquire DevOps Startup BoxBoat

By

IBM has acquired more than 11 companies over the past year and is about to pick up another with DevOps startup BoxBoat.

BoxBoat was founded in 2017 in Bethesda, Maryland as a tool to help clients deploy containers and Kubernetes and as an advisor to Fortune 100 companies, government agencies, and other third-party clients (such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Google). According to Tim Hohman, CEO, and co-founder of BoxBoat, the company was formed around the idea that "containers and DevOps would become an industry standard with the potential to transform enterprise IT with lightning-fast application deployment workflows."

BoxBoat will soon be joining IBM Global Business Services' Hybrid Cloud Services, which will allow the company to gain a better foothold on the ever-increasing demand for Kubernetes and container deployment.

As to the company itself, BoxBoat has focused on helping companies with application containerization, platform ops, Kubernetes, Docker, cloud and on-premise data centers, security/auditing, managed services, DevOps automation, digital platform strategies, training and enablement, and infrastructure/orchestration support. BoxBoat works with partners such as Rancher, GitLab, HashiCorp, Docker, Coder, Aqua, and Styra.

John Granger, senior vice president of IBM’s hybrid cloud services, said of the upcoming acquisition of BoxBoat, “Our clients require a cloud architecture that allows them to operate across a traditional IT environment, private cloud, and public clouds. That’s at the heart of our hybrid cloud approach. No cloud modernization project can succeed without a containerization strategy, and BoxBoat is at the forefront of container services innovation.”
