HP Updates Firmware for Printer Security
In the announcement, HP states that it has received no customer reports of unauthorized access and reiterates its recommendation to follow best practices for securing devices by placing printers behind a firewall and, where possible, disabling remote firmware upload on exposed printers.
Along with the update, HP has created a site to help administrators assess their printer security. The site includes tools to help identify lapses in printing security and determine whether professional assessment is needed. The tools include the HP Security Action Plan for Imaging and Printing, which walks users through a self-assessment and explains what security should be in place. It also includes a printing security checklist and a whitepaper titled “Practical Considerations for IPG Security.”
The firmware update can be found at http://www.hp.com/support, and the security tools are available at http://www.hp.com/go/secureprinting.
