US Announces New Reports on Energy and AI
The US Department of Energy (DOE) has announced some new steps in followup to the Biden administration’s executive order on Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence.
Recent actions include two reports on energy and AI:
- AI and Energy: Opportunities for a Modern Grid and Clean Energy Economy -- a summary of the “near-term potential to support the growth of America’s clean energy economy;
- AI for Energy Report 2024-- a report describing an “ambitious framework for accelerating clean energy deployment while minimizing risks and costs in the face of climate change.”
The press release also mentions several other actions, including the VoltAlc initiative, and effort to streamline siting and permitting for AI-based energy projects, as well as a new working group on powering AI and data center infrastructure. The Office of Critical and Emerging Technologies has also launched a website to showcase DOE-developed AI tools and models. According to US Department of Energy secretary Jennifer M. Granholm, the DOE is “...accelerating its AI work on multiple fronts to not only keep the US globally competitive, but also to manage AI’s increasing energy demand so we can maintain our goal of a reliable, affordable, and clean energy future.”
