Microsoft Releases .NET Core 2.0 and Visual Studio
On August 14, Microsoft announced the release of three projects, the final release of .NET Core 2.0, Visual Studio 2017 version 15.3, and Visual Studio for Mac version 7.1.
.NET Core 2.0, as the version number implies, is the second major release of .NET Core. This release expands the set of APIs available through .NET Standard 2.0.
“The .NET Standard 2.0 spec is complete, finalized at the same time as .NET Core 2.0. .NET Standard is a key effort to improve code sharing and to make the APIs available in each .NET implementation more consistent. .NET Standard 2.0 more than doubles that set of APIs that you have available for your projects," Microsoft said in a press release.
.NET Core 2.0 comes with libraries and a run time, as well as tools for building, running, and debugging applications. One of the major highlights of this release is support for containerizing ASP.NET Core.
On the Visual Studio side, the version 15.3 release focuses on improving accessibility with screen readers. This release has added tools for developing C# Azure Functions to the “Azure development” workload. "The main feature change is that this update enables you to create pre-compiled C# Azure Functions, which start faster than script-based functions," said Microsoft.
.NET Core 2.0 is available for download for all fours platforms, including macOS, Linux, Windows, and Docker.
