Linux Foundation Forms High Performance Software Foundation

The foundation will provide a neutral home for key HPC projects.

The Linux Foundation has launched the High Performance Software Foundation (HPSF), following their previous intent to launch announced back in November 2023.

“Through a series of technical projects, HPSF aims to build, promote, and advance a portable core software stack for high performance computing (HPC) by increasing adoption, lowering barriers to contribution, and supporting development efforts,” the announcement states.

Initial open source projects in the foundation include:

  • Apptainer: Formerly known as Singularity, Apptainer is a Linux Foundation project providing a full-featured HPC and computing optimized container subsystem.
  • E4S: A curated, hardened distribution of scientific software packages.
  • HPCToolkit: Performance measurement and analysis tools for computers ranging from desktop systems to GPU-accelerated supercomputers.
  • Kokkos: A performance-portable programming model for writing modern C++ applications in a hardware-agnostic way.
  • Spack: The HPC package manager.
  • Viskores: (formerly VTK-m) A toolkit of scientific visualization algorithms for accelerator architectures.

The HPSF, which is supported by a variety of member organizations, plans to form a technical advisory committee (TAC) to manage working groups and will follow a governance plan similar to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation. Visit HPSF to learn more.
