New Frontiers Program Launched to Fund HPC Research

The $23 million program is led by Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

The US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science has announced New Frontiers, a $23 million research and development opportunity led by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

This program aims to accelerate the research and development of “critical technologies with renewed emphasis on energy efficiency for the next generation of post-exascale computing,” according to the announcement.

“Energy efficiency is becoming critical to building future generations of leadership-scale computers and will involve development of new approaches to hardware, software, and application algorithms," said ORNL’s Al Geist, Chief Technology Officer of the DOE Exascale Computing Project.

Through this program, ORNL is specifically soliciting “innovative R&D proposals in the areas of hardware technologies, software technologies, and cross-cutting technologies.” The program will focus on “open source and sustainable software technologies for extreme scale HPC systems.”
